Open a shop and sell items from the donation pool or shop (check market first to see which are worth stocking)

Do missions (World -> Missions).

Similar to GuyFawkes; buy from the furniture store and sell on the market for a profit 

I agree with GuyFawkes too and I think it's important too to play poker, like that you will make friends that will help you. That's how I gathered a lot of chips. I was broke at first and other players would tell me to put a white job token in shop for like 100k.

Ohh don't say that - people will start expecting it :).

If you see someone selling furniture cheaper than the market, buy it because you may need it later for missions.  Also, check the donation pool for items.  Every now and then, someone will put a big item up.
