How are we supposed to win if two powerful people destroy us before the race starts?! We need to fix it—but of course it will never happen!!! Ughh!

First of all, you have to have enough prospectors to get this right

so i will answer this in 2-3 parts.1) direct answer. 2) tips to improve your race results
3) my opinion of the question...

1)
a) For most players there is a high chance someone higher could join the race. Thats life.
b) Chances are, the higher lvl player will be in Your team. Great!
c) Have you ever looked at the final race score? Even i (lvl 170) manage to get less points than some bots in races where i dont need to win; where i only participate for the participation quest. So this means sometimes its not the fault of any big player, but instead its the bots gaining more points than you. Or might be.
d) I would guess only the top 5 or so players online at any given time can force a/ have a guaranteed win. For the rest of us, we gotta live with it.
e) Maybe you are not really angry at the big guys but at the time required? I mean as long as you have a decent opponent and decent bots, chances are you will not win every time. so the 2 wins for the quest might take 45+ minutes. I know it sux, but the other guy may need a win too?

2) Better results/more/faster wins.
a) Before the race starts you can chat with the other team. you can ask that they let you win if they dont need the win.
b) only crystals you get from kills during the race count.
- so make sure you have an empty cargo hold
- clear the map of any crystals you killed earlier. you wouldn't want to fill your cargo with crystals that dont give points.
c) beforehand place a beacon somewhere where you know to be lots of mines you can and want to kill during the race. Jump there when it starts.
d) You can easily tripple your points if you just dump your cargo hold on the map and dont jump back and forth between towns and your current location all the time. Of course, those crystals might be gone when you get arround collecting them later. Also you should avoid collecting them again, since you wont get any more points for them.
e) Improve your ship, obviously. More Damage and Cargo space will help, as will the right crew etc etc.. You can check my guide for some help in this area: goldfire.me/forums/thread/606087dc1c547e6f0cbb6567/beginner-intermediate-guide
f) If your opponent is overly powerfull, stick arround for another race. Chances are, he/she will be on your team next race. YAY!
g) If you only need wins or participations, try joining at random times. You might get added to a team thats already winning. If you time it right between when you see the message that 1 player is required for a race and your joining 5-7-ish minutes later, you may join a race thats only got 2 minutes to go. For the most part, of course, you could have just joined from the beginning thouh..

3)
well, this is a question i would have expected from Stopthat or the sort. It shows you are either young, very new to the game or ...

Does anyone know how matchmaking works for someone who joins partway through a race? I remember a recent race where GMA40 joined about six minutes in, and I was completely dominating the other side. Before he joined, I was the only player on my team, and the other team also only had one player, so I would expect a newly joined player to be placed on the losing team, but the opposite happens. If you want me to, I can post a screenshot of the final scoreboard.

@andre1 how do you get legendary instead of scraps and smalls?

@AlphaNight I'm assuming you mostly destroy shipwrecks and mines guarded by 1 or 2 small guardians, since these mostly give scraps and smalls. You need to destroy mines with more and stronger guardians, although you should only attempt this with a stronger ship, and you need prospectors, which are crew that increase the amount of crystals you get from a mine.

@cl82771 is right, but don't forget captains, which are just as important as prospectors.

Is butterfly your main
